Rhodes, Greece

"Rhodes (or Rodos) is an island in the Aegean Sea, the largest of the Dodecanese Island complex. It is located at the southeastern edge of the archipelagos of the Dodecanese, facing the shores of Asia Minor, which are about 9-10 kilometers away.  It is one of the largest and most beautiful Greek islands. Its landscape mainly comprises of hills and low mountains, which in their majority are covered with forests.

Rhodes has been inhabited since the Stone Age. In prehistoric time the island was inhabited by Cretans, who where the first settlers on the island, the Phoenicians and Dorians who must have installed themselves on the island prior to the Trojan War. (1184 BC). After the Trojan war the rapid progress and development of the ancient civilization of Rhodes commences, examples of which can be seen nowadays in the antiquities of the three largest and most powerful cities of the island, Lindos, Ialyssos and Kamiros.

Historically, Rhodes was famous worldwide for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The medieval Old Town of the City of Rhodes has been declared a World Heritage Site. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe."

An easy walk into the old town along the quayside

What a beautiful medieval old town - our favourite so far!  The quaint little alleyways with doors opening straight off the winding walk ways. So colourful with all the souvenirs and trinkets to trap the tourists.

Note the cobbled streets

Barb bought a lovely top here

One of many restaurants under shady trees

A typical little restaurant tucked away around a corner

Icecream presented in animal shapes - yummy!

Making the most of free wifi!

Our sightseeing was always interrupted with a stop at a street restaurant offering "free wifi".  Free if you buy something to eat and drink!!!  Quickly uploading pics to Facebook and blog and always a Skype call to Mom and children.

Les caught in the act

Baklava which we all shared!

We were firm believers in stretching the Euros as much as we could and this plate of Baklava went round and round our table.  I wonder what the other clients thought?  But you know what..........

And now for a wee bit of shopping!

Note Russ - the guys had to excercise patience!

Linen tablecloths

Do I look pleased with my purchase?

and Barb with hers!

Well spoiled with our purchases, we made our way back to the ship laden with parcels and quite happy to relax on the pool deck with something cool to drink.

A view from the ship as we were leaving this beautiful island

As we leave another ship arrives

Les in the Jaccuzi

Our next island is Santorini which is a "tender" port ie. no quay side docking.
